Happy Birthday Dennis

Today, 25 Jan 2017, sees one of our stalwarts celebrate a milestone birthday (he’s 80!). Dennis Fitton is one of our ride leaders, a workshop volunteer and keen promoter and supporter of all things Watford Cycle Hub related.

Mad keen on all things cycling, he has been a Spokes member for some 20 years, regularly leading rides, is a National Cycle Group leader for the U3A and is a qualified Ride Leader and Route Planner and an active participant in our Ride Social Programme.

Having been a passionate cyclist for most of his life Dennis asked if he could pop in regularly to do some volunteering … “fettling” with (helping to recondition) bikes in return for being around the chaps to learn more about ‘modern’ bikes!

Of course his talents don’t just stop there; after his last excursion into the Cycle Hub, an annoying catch on the door now closes with ease!

80 years young!  Congrats & hats off you Dennis!  Many Happy Returns!

Get Involved And Volunteer

volunteer_03How Can You Help?

Watford Cycle Hub at this relatively early stage in its life, without external funding, depends heavily on support from volunteers. These committed individuals help with all manner of things from running bike maintenance courses, stripping down and rebuilding up donated bikes through to ‘front-of-house’ duties, cleaning and making coffee, all of which are equality important, but we could always do with more. Can you help?

What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is ‘cycling proficiency’ for the 21st century, designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

There are three Bikeability levels, with each level designed to help improve their cycling skills, no matter what they know already. Levels 1, 2 and 3 take trainees on a journey from the basics of balance and control, all the way through to planning and making a journey by themselves on busier roads.

Children will typically start Bikeability lessons once they have learnt to ride a bike.
Level 1 will help new riders to control their bike before they move on to developing on-road skills at Level 2.
Level 2 is usually tackled by children in Years 5 or 6, before they leave primary school.

Level 3 teaches trainees how to ride in different and more challenging traffic situations, and is usually completed by children of secondary school age.
To register participants must have already successfully completed Level 2.

Kids will enjoy learning the skills and developing the confidence to ride their bikes on today’s roads.

The courses start on the dates below, click on a course for more information and to book online.

Billie Fleming Ride January 2nd 2015

Tribute to Billie

It was great to wake up to clear blue skies, sunshine and no frost for our Tribute to Billie Day 2 ride.  We gathered at the Watford Cycle Hub from 8:00 to fill up on coffee and bacon butties.

WP_000238

Following a photo call the main group of Sarah, Ian, Cath, Richard, Lesley, Jacqui, Nick, Kate and Veronica set off towards Rickmansworth.  Their route then took them to Denham and out into the Chiltens towards Wendover.

Who came partly by train?

The shorter group consisting of Fiona, Debbie, Mags, Marc  and Robert caught the train to Tring then cycled to Aldbury and enjoyed refreshments in a pub whilst waiting for the main ride. However, after some changes to the route and plan we rode through Wiggington to meet up under the clock tower in Chesham and the 9 of us remaining cycled the final 20 miles or so as a whole group back to the Hub for a well-deserved cuppa and some fantastic homemade stolen, courtesy of Debbie!

A total of 14 riders made the event

The group varied during the day with people joining and leaving at different points but in total 14 people took part in some part of the ride and the distance travelled by the lead cyclist was 60.1 miles.

Group in order is Nick, Ian, Fiona, Mags, Cath, Sarah, Kate & Jacqui

new fully equipped mobile bicycle repair van

robThree-time Olympic cycling medallist and sports commentator Rob Hayles showcases our service dedicated to carrying out mobile repairs on bicycles

With more and more people choosing to cycle regularly we felt a need to make it easy for people in Watford & the surrounding area to get their bike serviced at a convenient place and affordable price. We will take the service out into key places in the community and fix bikes where it suits you.

People will be able to drop their bikes in to our new, fully-equipped mobile bicycle repair van. We will have a regular timetable of visits to local rail & tube stations, business parks, community venues and Watford General Hospital.

We are thrilled that cycling star Rob Hayles helped us showcase the initiative. He said; “A no-fuss, same day bike service where you need it is what we all want. That’s the great thing about what Watford Cycle Hub is doing.  It’s a real timesaver for busy people and families who might not be able to get their bikes over to a specialist shop. Keeping your bike well maintained is something we all have to do and anything that makes it a bit easier and faster is a massive help.”

We thank all our wonderful partners and supporters for helping us to develop this offer, particularly Hertfordshire County Council’s BIGHERTSBIGIDEAS who awarded a grant from their Local Sustainable Transport Fund to help extend our services.

More information including timetable and pricing to follow.

Watford Cycle Hub-a year down the line

The latest ‘About Watford’ magazine article celebrates the Watford Cycle Hub one year on!

extract from About Watford December 2013 ….. download the web version here

“Watford Cycle Hub is a community resource for people who cycle or want to cycle in Watford. Set up by Kate Jenkins as a ‘notfor-profit venture,’ with funding from Watford Community Housing Trust and the Council, the Cycle Hub is a place you can have your bicycle serviced, repaired and reconditioned by professionally qualified cycle mechanics. No job is too small for the Hub’s friendly mechanics or you can learn how to do all those things yourself! Tools and work-bays are available for hire with guidance and training available.

You can pick up free route maps, browse cycle magazines and use Wi-Fi, plus buy reasonably priced refreshments and cycle accessories. You can also get involved with community bike rides, meet other cyclists and join in with fun events. Of course, cycling doesn’t stop over the winter months. Watford Cycle Hub can help with Christmas gifts – from personalised cycle accessories, fully reconditioned ‘like new’ bikes and sessions to safely build new boxed bikes.

Maintenance modules can also help ‘winterise your bike’.

Highlights of the Hub’s first year include:
• a community award for junior apprentice, Adam Welch
• oversubscribed ‘women’s only cycling’ and ‘maintenance module’ programmes
• a Sky Ride local participation record for Cassiobury Park based rides
• a visit from the Prime Minister, British Cycling’s Sir David Brailsford and Olympians Victoria Pendleton and Sir Chris Hoy.

Everyone can get involved as a customer, volunteer, by donating unloved or outgrown bikes or helping to spread the word!”

A Weekend of Mountain Biking!

Mountain Biking

The Watford Cycle Hub team have just finished a weekend mountain bike leader course (MIAS GEARS) and are now qualified to take groups out on guided mountain bike rides.

Amongst other bits and bobs the two day course involved some theory work (risk assessment and route planning etc), assessment of our leadership skills, technical ability and guidance on how to react in an emergency.

We endured some testing weather and difficult ground conditions over the weekend.  On Sunday we were up at Wendover woods, being put through our paces by our course instructor – Lee Niven from Outdoor TEC.  We arrived back at the Cycle Hub on Sunday night, thoroughly exhausted, covered head to toe in mud but raring to get back out on the bikes and practice the new skills we’d picked up.

If you’d like to take part in a mountain bike ride get in contact with us and we’ll arrange a trip: info@watfordcyclehub.org.uk
